Versed (midazolam)

 

 

Classification: Sedative and hypnotic

 

Indications: Cardioversion and other painful procedures

 

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to Versed, in shock with depressed vital signs, alcoholic coma, acute narrow angle glaucoma, hypotension, head injury

 

Interactions: It may be accentuated by central nervous system depressants like narcotis and alcohol.

 

Side Effects: Laryngospam, bronchospasm, dyspnea, respitory depression and arrest, drowsiness, altered mental status, amnesia, bradycardia, premature ventricular contractions

 

Dosage and Route: IV 1.0 - 2.5 mg Slow IV

                                      IM 0.07 - 0.08 mg/kg (average adult is 5mg)

 

 

Other information about Versed:

Midazolam is a water-soluble benzodiazepine derivative. In anesthesia it provides loss of awareness and memory for short diagnostic tests and surgical procedures; produces sleep at the beginning of surgery; or supplements other types of general anesthetics. Midazolam does not reduce pain or cause loss of consciousness.

 

Flumazenil which is a benzodiazepine antagonist should be available as an antidote to respitory depression and arrest if required.Other emergency resuscitative equipment must also be available prior to the administration of the Versed.
