Classifications: Antiasthmatic (Leukotriene inhibitor)

 

Mechanism of Action: Zyflo, which contains the active ingredient zileuton, blocks the formation of leukotrienes that may contribute to inflammation, edema, mucus secretion, and bronchoconstriction in the airways of asthmatic patients.

 

Indications: Zyflo is indicated for the chronic treatment of asthma and should be taken regularly as prescribed, even during symptom-free periods. Zyflo is not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks, including status asthmaticus. Therapy with Zyflo can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma.

 

Contraindications: Zyflo tablets are contraindicated in patients with:.

 

     • Active liver disease or transaminase (liver enzymes) elevations greater than or equal to three times the upper limit of normal

     • Hypersensitivity to zileuton or any of its inactive ingredients.

 

Precautions: Elevations of one or more liver function tests

 

Interactions: There are possible interactions with Beta blockers, Calcium channel blockers, Terfenadine, Theophylline,  Warfarin

 

Side Effects:

 

     Body as a whole: Headache, unspecific pain, Abdominal pain, weakness/loss of strength, Accidental injury, Flu-like symptoms

     Gastrointestinal system: vomitting, upper abdominal disease (Dyspepsia), Nausea

     Musculoskeletal system: Muscle pain

 

Dosage and Route:

 

     Adult: One 600mg tablets, four times daily or 2400mg daily

     Children (12 years and older): One 600mg tablets, four times daily or 2400mg daily (As determined by their doctor)

 

Special considerations:  Zyflo is not recommended for children under the age of 12 and woman who are pregnant or who are breast feeding
