Trade Name: Geodon

 

Classifications:  Antipsychotic

 

Description: Unrelated to the phenothiazines or buytyrophenone classes of antipsychotics. Known to bind to serotonin,dopamine, histamines and a1-adrenergic receptors.

 

Mechanism of Action: Action is unknown, but is probably related to inhibition of symaptic uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine.

                                                                Hafe-life: 7 hours

 

Indications: Acute psychosis and Tourette's syndrome.

 

Contraindictions: patients with hypersensitivity to the drug, patient with QT syndrome.

 

Precations: Use with caution in patients with history of seizures,strokes, Alzheimer's disease, or with known cardiovascular disease.

 

Side Effects:  myalgias, somnolence, dizziness, tremor, dyskinesia, extrapyramidal effects(dystonia), tachycardia, postural hypotension, nausea, and dry mouth.

 

Interastions: Carbazepine (Tegretol) may decrease ziprasidone levels. Interactions may occur with antidysrhythics,antidpressants and ethonal.

 

Dosage: Ten to 20mg IM up to a maximum dose 40mg
